Offering a complete contrast to Cairo with its sandy beaches, extensive waterfront and Mediterranean ambience, Alexandria is Egypt's second largest city. Founded in 332 BC by Alexander the Great, the city quickly became a major center of learning, attracting leading scholars, philosophers and scientists. The newly opened Library of Alexandria, a stunning architectural achievement, seeks to replace the original as a 21st century cultural center.
